About RPI SWE

The Society of Women Engineers is the largest non-profit educational and service organization representing both student and professional women in engineering and technical fields. Founded in 1950, it was designed to serve as a center of information on women in engineering and to encourage women engineers to attain high levels of education and professional achievement. SWE represents over 19,000 members in 90 professional sections and 300 student sections- one of which is here at RPI.

With 190 members, we hold activities on and off-campus that include monthly general meetings, interacting with local Girl Scout troops and schools to encourage interest in science and engineering, visits by corporate speakers, workshops on professional topics, attending national and regional conferences, hosting an etiquette dinner, and fun social events.

In addition, SWE is a unique opportunity to meet other women on campus with similar interests as your own, give and receive support, and create a network of friends. However, you need not be an engineer or even a female to join! We have many events and opportunities which can benefit any major or gender at RPI, including corporate guests and interview/resume training.

A National SWE Student Membership offers support systems, including peer groups, mentors, advisors and industry leaders; section programming including speaker events, seminars and leadership opportunities; access to the SWE career Center for internship and full time employment search and inclusion in our Resume Book; a subscription to SWE Magazine; and the ability to attend SWE National and Regional Conferences which offer professional development seminars, networking opportunities with practicing women engineers and other students, and career fairs. You may sign-up for national membership online or contact Andrea Dalton for more information.

Our Faculty Advisors

SWE is not only run by a student Executive board, but we have two faculty advisors here at RPI. Linda Schadler is a professor in the Materials Science and Engineering Department. Her office is on the first floor of the MRC, and she can be emailed. Our second faculty advisor is an assistant professor here at RPI in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. Susan Sharfstein can be emailed as well. Feel free to get in contact with our faculty advisors!
